Day 11- Hayley Devoe – Building Her Lungs Post TP/IAT

Hayley woke up in pain today today. She had Gravol last night for nausea.

We tried to walk however the pain is pretty intense.

Dr. David (part of Dr. Shapiro’s team) came in and said the pain is still healing pain. They are carefully monitoring all her levels.

Hayley noticed her PICC incision is swollen so Dr’s have been called back. The medication could be leaking out of the vein and into the inside of her arm. They will likely have to do an x-ray to see what is going on.

Her medication was reduced today;

Hayley had her first solid food – Turkey sandwich

Apple juice

Weight coming into hospital May-30-2013 – 79.4

Weight – June-11-2013- 76.3

Weight loss – 79.4 – 76.3 Conversion = 7lbs

(175-168=7lbs)

Hayley had MAJOR gas pains from 6am-7:30am and finally 7:31am she started scampering to the bathroom (in reverse). The time finally came when her bowels gave in! I was not allowed to film that pat…I did ask…L

Hayley is suffering with gas pains. She can’t seem to get off the toilet

In speaking with Dr. Cocay he has said he is very pleased with Hayley’s progress and that my worrying about the pain is not necessary.

Dr. Cocay also mentioned that he may let Hayley level off for a few days on the meds and see if her mobility picks up.

Hayley went for an ultrasound today on her PICC line. She has a blood clot in the PICC but they are saying not to worry too much the line and meds still seemingly make it to the main artery.

WELL ..the nurse just came in and Hayley has to get another PICC line inserted tomorrow. She has had more crap dealt her way I feel so badly.   I will be speaking to the pain team and I will ask for them NOT to reduce her pain meds tomorrow.

End

Hayley Devoe – CBC Radio Interview – Jun 18, 2013

    listen

This is a radio interview done with CBC Radio Edmonton from the Alberta Stollery Children's Hospital May 31st, 2013. The interview was done one month after her 13 hour (TP/IAT) Total Pancreactomy & Auto Islet Transplant. By this time Hayley should have had a lot less pain than she was experiencing but we were remaining optimistic. Hayley had opportunity to do both radio and TV interviews to talk about being the 2nd child in Canada to undergo this type of rare surgery and also bring raise awareness to the wrath of Chronic Pancreatitis and the TP/IAT procedure. Hayley chose not to do any further interviews to support the surgery because she already knew in her heart that the surgery was NOT doing what it was supposed to. The surgery was done with almost no pre-testing. Looking back I am now wondering what did the doctor base his positive comment on? His words were that he was 99.9% sure that the surgery was going to help Hayley's pain considerably and maybe even stop it altogether! Never did he say it could make it worse...
