Video – Hayley’s Pancreatic – PICC Line Insertion – Feed Tube

Posted on October 13, 2012 by Jenny in Treatments Tried No Comments

PICC Line Insertion!

The following is a video of a PICC Line Insertion. This was one of the many frightening procedures that have been used on Hayley to shut down her pancreas.  This meant she was not allowed her to eat or drink anything (not even chew gum) for 14 days. The thought was in doing this procedure they would stop the pancreas from working (as its one job is to break down fatty foods it actually reacts to anything taken by mouth) and see if it reduced Hayley’s pain. While this video is not Hayley the procedure room it is no different than what she had done.

Anticipating a Feeding Tube-So Frightning

You will see that A PICC is a long, flexible tube that is put into a vein in your arm and threaded up into a large vein just above your heart. It is used for giving fluids, nutrition or drug treatment into your bloodstream. PICC stands for “Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter”.  You are awake during this procedure.  The video seen “Hayley after the PICC” shows a very disoriented little girl.  It took several hours for her mind to settle down.  I believe it was very traumatic for her and so she “checked out mentally” for quite some time.  Sickkids never gave it enough time it just started to work and they ripped her off it.  I believe if they would have given it a longer period of time she would have responded much better.  Again time is money even for the worst cases!

Hayley Devoe – CBC Radio Interview – Jun 18, 2013

    listen

This is a radio interview done with CBC Radio Edmonton from the Alberta Stollery Children's Hospital May 31st, 2013. The interview was done one month after her 13 hour (TP/IAT) Total Pancreactomy & Auto Islet Transplant. By this time Hayley should have had a lot less pain than she was experiencing but we were remaining optimistic. Hayley had opportunity to do both radio and TV interviews to talk about being the 2nd child in Canada to undergo this type of rare surgery and also bring raise awareness to the wrath of Chronic Pancreatitis and the TP/IAT procedure. Hayley chose not to do any further interviews to support the surgery because she already knew in her heart that the surgery was NOT doing what it was supposed to. The surgery was done with almost no pre-testing. Looking back I am now wondering what did the doctor base his positive comment on? His words were that he was 99.9% sure that the surgery was going to help Hayley's pain considerably and maybe even stop it altogether! Never did he say it could make it worse...
